Engineering Access: CRLT-Engineering Builds a Culture of Inclusion

Kellie Grassman and the CRLT-Engin team didn’t just update Canvas content; they created a new standard for accessibility at the College of Engineering. As pilot recipients of the Digital Accessibility Grant, they transformed two major orientation courses (for faculty and GSIs) into fully accessible, beautifully designed models using DesignPLUS, Panorama, transcripts, captions, tagged PDFs, and more.

The team completed staff training, hired and coached student workers, and built new internal processes for tracking and remediating documents. They even created practical guidelines for generating transcripts and collaborated with content partners across U-M to share knowledge, and spread accessibility awareness beyond their own unit.

What were the results of this hard work? New instructors now start their U-M journey with fully accessible orientation courses and an early, clear example of how inclusive digital teaching should look and feel.
