Procurement

New to using this roadmap? Start on the Digital Accessibility Compliance Roadmap page to understand the structure of the roadmap, how to use it, and how to get help.

Comprehensive resources to support procurement compliance are currently in development.  Those resources, along with updated roadmap guidance, are coming by the Fall 2026 term.

In the interim, if you are purchasing or working on contract renewals for IT-related products or services follow the guidance below.

What You Need to Know

Who is responsible?

  • Individuals who purchase covered products or services on behalf of a U-M unit
  • Procurement Services Buyers who support unit requestors through the purchase process

Which products and services are covered?

Examples of types of products and services that should be scrutinized for digital accessibility include, but not limited to:

  • E-Learning courses, materials, and integrations
  • Digital asset remediation services (e.g., PDF remediation, video captioning, audio transcription, described video)
  • IT Hardware controlled via software or a digital user interface (e.g., printers, kiosks)
  • Software, application, and website development services
  • Videography and audio recording services

What steps do I need to take?

If you are already working with Procurement Services to purchase a covered product or service (or manage a contract renewal), keep doing so. Procurement Services Buyers have access to tools and information to account for digital accessibility considerations and will consult with subject matter experts at U-M where necessary. Please work with suppliers to gather any digital accessibility-related information a Procurement Services Buyer requests in a timely manner.

If the nature of a covered product or service does not require you to work with Procurement Services, please consult with the Disability Equity Office directly regarding compliance requirements.

Submit a Disability Equity Office consultation request (under Reason for Contact select “Digital Accessibility Question, Consult Request or Review”). Please submit requests early to allow as much time as possible for consultations to be completed.
