MiVideo Accessibility

MiVideo is a platform that is used by the university to deliver prerecorded content for classes instructional videos, and other events. The following sections will provide guidance on how to use the platform with Windows and Mac screen readers. For the best screen reader experience, the accessibility team recommends that Chrome be used.

Windows

NVDA

  • There are no level 1 headings on the video page. To move to the video player, press 3 to jump to the first heading at level 3, then use (Shift + b) until the play button is reached.
    • When tested, this required 6 presses of (Shift + b).
  • The slider for jumping forward and backward is not implemented correctly for screen reader accessibility.
    • Use (Insert + Spacebar) until you are in browse mode, which is identified via the playing of a solid tone sound.
    • Press the (Down arrow) key until you hear the progress being read (for example, “0:17 / 19:30”).
    • To repeat the time elapsed, use the read line command:
      • On desktop: (Insert + Up arrow)
      • On laptop: (Insert + l)
  • If you are located on the slider and want to skip through the video, you will need to adjust the elapsed time:
    1. Ensure that you are in forms mode by pressing (Insert + Spacebar).
    2. Next, use the (Left arrow) and (Right arrow) keys to move through the video. As you do this, the screen reader will not speak anything. However, you should hear a break in the audio followed by the new content.
    3. To check the new elapsed time, press (Insert + Spacebar) to leave forms mode and use the read line command above to read the elapsed time.
    4. If additional time adjustments are required, use (Insert + Spacebar) to enter forms mode again and continue using the arrow keys to move the slider.
  • Currently, there are some accessibility issues with printing and downloading the transcript. To work around these:
    1. Ensure that you are in browse mode by pressing (Insert + Spacebar) until you hear a solid tone, then from the video player press e. NVDA should say “frame edit”.
    2. Next, press the Down arrow to move to the 3 controls. These are:
      • Collapse/Expand, which doesn’t appear relevant for screen reader users
      • Print, which prints the transcript, and
      • Download, which allows the transcript to be downloaded as a text file.

To navigate to these controls, use the arrow keys in browse mode, as (Tab) will not navigate to them. To select a control, use the NVDA command (Capslock + Enter).

JAWS

    4. Focus will be on the Play button so you will have to use the (Down arrow) key to move back to the time slider.
    5. You can use the read line command (Insert + Up arrow) to read the elapsed time again.
    6. If additional time adjustments are required, use (Insert + z) to disable the virtual PC cursor and continue using the arrow keys to move the slider.
  • Currently, there are some accessibility issues with printing and downloading the transcript. To work around these:
